Pitbull Colors

Pit bulls are difficult to describe: they are absolute champions of external diversity. Such complexity is the result of the existence of hundreds of club standards. In addition, there are many breeders involved in Pitbull breeding. But there is one thing that all Pit bulls have in common: a short, glossy, hard coat, without undercoat.

As far as its colors, it is the same variety. The Pit bull breeds actually allow any color: from simple monochrome to complex “artistic”. There are colors that are forbidden for breeding, but popular with dog breeders. But there are also such, which can be distinguished only by specialists.

Types of Pitbull Colors

Types of pitbull colors is a fascinating topic, full of contradictions and unexpected discoveries.

The Pitbull is the owner of a short coat with a stiff, elastic, close-fitting hair. The pitbull has no hair in the belly area. The muzzle, paws and ears are covered with velours hairs, which are shorter than the main coat. The pigmentation of the pit bull’s nose, lips varies, as does the color palette of the coat. A dog’s coat can be almost anything: the breed even allows chaotic inclusions of white and colored spots.

Attention! People who want to buy an unusual-looking pit bull are not fully aware of the problems they may encounter in the future. There are colors (for example, merle) that are artificial for pit bulls and lead to congenital diseases and serious mental disorders.

Before buying a cute pit bull puppy, one should know not only the breed’s origin, its biometric characteristics, but also understand why, for example, buying a luxury blue-eyed albino pitbull puppy involves a lot of problems and complications.

Pit Bull Breed Color Patterns

The pitbull, as well as the other representatives of the canine world, has the same number of color loci, twelve in total. There is no breed of dog that has all twelve loci present at the same time.

Color is the most important criterion when choosing a pit bull breed dog. The coat of pit bulls is characterized by heterogeneity, it consists of different types of hair.

Important! The color of the dog is rendered through the hair, and the shade is controlled by the pigment. If there is a lack/absence of pigment – the coat looks colorless. Pit bulls have three basic colors of pigment: black, brown, yellow.

Pit bull fans should know that there is a special red-nosed line of dogs. Cynologists refer it to the so-called “old family” red nose. All red-nosed pit bulls have a reddish color, copper-colored nose, lips, paw pads and deep brown eyes.

The coloring of skin and coat is formed by a special pigment, melanin. There are two varieties of it:

  • Eumelanin (which is black and brown in color);
  • Pheomelanin (a yellow and orange color).
    The genotype of colored individuals is formed through a variety of “gene sets”. The following genes are responsible for a pit bull’s coat color:
  • “C” – creates pigmentation of any color;
  • “A” – spreads pigmentation throughout the coat;
  • “B” – creates black color;
  • “c” – partial albinism;
  • “b” – creates brown pigment.

The eyes of this breed can be any color: it is not uncommon for a pit bull to have yellow, green, or even blue eyes.

Pitbull Color Options

Any color of eyes, iris, nose and ears is possible for the pit bull breed. But at shows, experts take into account the harmony of the color of dogs in general.

Types of Pitbull Pigmentation:

  • solid
  • brindle
  • spotted
    The standards of the breeds assume the following variants of coat color:
  • Tan
  • Brindle
  • Liver
  • White
  • Black
  • Fawn
  • Tricolor
  • Merle

Despite the fact that American Pitbull Terriers are the direct ancestors of American Staffordshire Terriers, AKC does not recognise them as a separate breed. Therefore, there are no clear-cut color standards for these dogs.

But here we are talking about colors of pitbulls in general for American Pitbull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier.

Officially we can speak about acknowledged color patterns for Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, as stated by AKC.

Merle

The Merle coloration appeared not so long ago, provoking controversy and criticism from Pit Bull fans, being officially forbidden for Staffordshire Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers.

Good to know! Merle is a dilution gene. By diluting the color genes, it contributes to the synthesis of uncharacteristic pit bull colors. The main danger is that the pigment cells are formed together with the same set of cells that form the pit bull’s nervous system.

Merle carries the following health hazards for pit bull breed dogs:

  • eye disease
  • hearing loss
  • infertility
  • congenital deformities
  • irreversible immune
  • mental illness

It is forbidden to mate pit bulls – carriers of such a gene. In natural environment individuals of such a rare gorgeous color cannot be born.

Black

Black as the night, as graceful as a panther, as beautiful as the devil – all this directly applies to a black pit bull. This dog has an incredibly mystical appearance. Coal-colored pit bulls with turquoise eyes look especially appealing. Pit bulls of the black color cause a feeling of fear in people. There is a controversy between experts: some claim the black color is standard for the breed, while others claim the black color tends to cause aggression and inadequate behavior.

You should know! The black color has no effect on the aggressiveness of the animal. It only makes the appearance of this powerful dog more intimidating, but nothing more. Black pit bulls are especially popular in the United States.

Black can come in a number of basic shades:

  1. Deep Black. This color may be combined with white сhest; small white “tie” or white tips on the toes are possible.
  2. Black and White. Assumes the presence of white marks. Their volume should not occupy more than 50% of the dog’s body surface.
  3. Tan and Black. On the background of a black coat there are marks in the form of spots of reddish, or light brown color. The patches are located above the eyes, on the muzzle, on the chest, as well as below the paws and under the tail.
  4. Tricolor. This shade is similar to the Black and Tan, but the dog also has white color patches.
  5. Dark Gray. This color is similar to black, but differs from it by more or less pronounced blue tint

Brindle

The brindle coat color (like a tiger) is the most common natural color of pit bulls. This coloration implies the presence of stripes abundantly covering the dog’s body. Also, it may not be stripes, but spots. Many Pitbull owners prefer it, as this natural color guarantees the health of the dog.

Tan

The coat of tan (beige) color looks spectacular on strong Pit Bulls. This color is recognized by breeders around the world. This pit bull color can be both one color and with patches.

White

Albinos are not uncommon among white individuals. The concept of albinism implies lack of color pigment. Such dogs of the Pitbull breed have two characteristic features: these dogs are blue-eyed and with light-colored noses. Despite their unique appearance, they are not recognized by breeders, so they are not allowed for breeding.

There are different color variations: from absolutely snow-white to grayish. The presence of a third color – in the form of spots – is possible.

Liver

We can speak about color shades from pure chocolate, dark brown chocolate, milk chocolate, to chocolate-white or chocolate patched.

Blue

The active demand for pit bull puppies of a beautiful blue color has led to a situation where dishonest breeders, understanding the ignorance of their buyers, sell them black-colored puppies (dark grey) under the guise of blue.

Tricolor

Tricolor Pit bulls are considered rare. The tri-color combination gives a lot of different color variations. The classic tricolor combination is black-white-red, and also the blue tricolor, and liver tricolor. All of these color combinations are allowed for the breed, they are recognized by breeders all over the world.

Summary

The current breeders get Pitbulls of various colors, with interesting patterns on the coat. Any color is allowed, except merle. The coat of a pit bull should be smooth, without undercoat.

2 – 3 Years Old Pitbulls

Complete development is finished by 2-3 years of life. It is at this age the first mating is planned.

Factors Affecting Pitbull Growth

The harmonious development of pit bulls depends on a group of factors:

  • Genetic predisposition;
  • The living conditions of the mother dog;
  • Nutrition,
  • Conditions of keeping puppies;
  • Absence of congenital abnormalities, diseases, infections, worm infestation.
  • One of the most important factors is the dog’s diet. The easiest option – food, canned premium food with a high content of natural ingredients, healthy pitbull treats.

About Pitbull Terrier

The strength, confidence and the passion for life are among the key characteristics that define this breed of American Pit Bull Terrier. He exhibits his versatility through winning in agility and obedience competitions with other service and fighting dog breeds. Through the years , the Pit Bull has finally evolved from a fearsome fighter to the perfect pet.

A breed developed for fighting, today it is employed for uses that are not akin to violence or brutality, such as body guarding , or in agility events. It is the American Pit Bull Terrier is an excellent hunter as well as an eternal traveler. The skills they possess are often utilized in police departments.

Although colloquially some dogs of similar stature are called “Pit Pull”, only the American Pit Bull Terrier officially bears the name – and this only in the USA, because European clubs do not recognize the breed as an independent breed. Most of the “Pit Bulls” found in Europe are American Staffordshire Terriers or crossbreeds. Common to all Pit Pulls, however, is that they have a bad reputation as “fighting dogs”.

History

Pitbull-type dogs enjoy an unpopular reputation within the United States and internationally, because of their involvement in dog fighting, numerous high-profile assaults published in the media over time and their tendency to latch to their owners when chewing.

Origin

In the 18th century, animal lovers across England, Ireland and Scotland began to experiment by crossbreeding terriers and bulldogs, seeking a dog that could combine the ability of a terrier and endurance and strength of the bulldog. This resulted in a pet which had all the traits that were that are associated with great warriors: the strength of their warriors, their invincible courage, and affection for loved ones. The immigrants brought them across their homeland in the United States.

The abilities that the american Pit Bull Terrier were not unnoticed by ranchers and farmers, who utilized the Pit Bulls to manage semi-wild cattle, pigs and other animals to hunt, stroll cattle and even as family members. Pitbull Terrier (from “pit” – fighting pit) refers to a bullfighter terrier. The breed was initially referred to as”a “pitdog” (fighting dog) as well as”half and half, “half and half”,”half and half, “bull terrier” (bulldog and terrier), “American bull terrier,” “Yankee terrier.”

The Development of the Breed

American Pit Bull Terriers had long been a beloved dog breed throughout America. They were extensively used in dogfights alongside other breeds of dogs. Terriers and bulldogs were utilized in the development of the breed. From the earlier Pit Bulls gained strength and determination, while terriers gained quick reaction speed and agility, this breed became an absolute weapon in fighting hunts, rescue and hunting.

Following the legalization of dogfighting within the United States, American Pit Bull Terriers were tightly controlledand breeding and raising of dogs for the purpose was prohibited. In order to gain the trust of everyday citizens the media regularly released stories of Pit Bull Terriers attacking people in horrendous pictures and harsh remarks.

Presently, the American Pit Bull Terrier is extremely popular within the United States and in other nations, yet it is prohibited in a number of European countries. Pit Bull Terriers excel in the hands of police officers. American law enforcement agencies. They are a great sniffer and are specialized in the search for explosives and drugs. It is not allowed to teach Pit Bulls in sports that require human aggression because of the demands for the breed (increased commitment towards humans).

Although most dog lovers know the name “Pit Bull”, it is often not clear which dog is meant. This is also due to the fact that the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), the largest international umbrella organization for dog breeding, has not yet recognized the breed as an independent breed. To understand this, we look into the past of the Pit Bull, about which its name already tells us a lot: The origin of the breeding efforts lies in the USA, where the breed was created by crossbreeding between British Bulldogs and Terriers. Out of these crossbreeds the breed American Staffordshire Terrier, called “Am Staff” for short. The goal of selective breeding was above all a good four-legged fighter, who should prove himself in the so-called “Pit”, the arena for animal fights. Here “Pit Bulls” were for example chased on rats in order to kill as many rats as possible in a given time. Fights against other dogs were also on the agenda for a long time.

Breed Standard

While it is the ancestral dog of the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier is only recognized through the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA), but not the American Kennel Club (AKC) as well as The International Canine Federation (FCI). The dog’s exterior is not yet regulated. no rigid standards.

It is the Pit Bull is a strong medium-sized dog that has a muscular and strong body, a wide strong chest, a huge neck, a wedge-shaped head, and a wide jaw that is powerful. Both thighs and the paws are massive and sturdy, with a medium-length tail is long at the bottom, but slightly tapered towards the end.

Pitbulls are classified into two varieties: terriers and bulldog type There are also two types of bulldogs: two mixed breeds. Weight isn’t a strict limit and may vary (See the table above). The ears can be cut, or not. The tail is not cut. The dog’s head may be as short and wide as bulldog style , or as narrow – terrier style.

On Staff Twin

Inevitably, Pit Bulls look very similar to American Staffordshire Terriers: The Pit Bull is a muscular, compact dog that can weigh about 27 kg with a shoulder height of up to 53 cm. The bulky head with the semi-erect hanging ears is conspicuous – so they were not docked in order to give the dog a “more dangerous appearance”: A practice, that fortunately is forbidden in most European countries meanwhile. But it is important to know that in some countries already the appearance similar to such a dog is enough to be not allowed to enter the country.

Pitbull Colors

Colors of Pit Bulls’ coats may be completely any color other than white and the merle. The most popular colors are brown in all shades with light patches on occasion. The coat itself is long and smooth. However its color nasal lobe should always be the same color as the rest of the nose.

Character

The legacy of cruel dog fights on the one hand, and irresponsible owners on the other, have brought the Pit Bull into disrepute. Badly socialized Pit Bulls can show a high degree of aggressiveness towards humans and animals, because they are intrepid and basically just what they were bred for in former times, namely “ready to fight”. In the relationship to humans, however, the breed is generally very submissive, which was already important during the inglorious animal-fighting times, because the four-legged animals always had to be able to be separated from the fight by a human without the two-legged being attacked. Like most of these “fighting dogs”, the Pit Bull shows that the danger comes from the other end of its leash. So carefully socialized Pit Bulls are considered to be gentle and with their intelligent nature and playfulness they are excellent dogs for sporty families and great companions for children. They are not suitable as guardians due to their willingness to subordinate. Basically, origin, socialization and upbringing are always decisive factors for a relaxed living together with this breed – respectively this breed variant. If one of these pillars shakes, the dog can become a danger – dog beginners should not take this risk under any circumstances.

This can have fatal consequences with an animal with the described facilities. In any case, always take a young Pit Bull for a puppy play lesson so that he gets used to handling different dogs. However, when they are socialized early, this behavior is reduced.

The Pitbull Terrier is more at ease with his family members as long periods of separation can impact the dog’s mental health.

Pit Bulls & Kids

When it comes to the bond that exists between Pit Bulls and children, Pitbulls are very affectionate with children. Pit Bulls are the perfect companion for your child, but it’s it’s not a good idea to let them be alone. You should only allow your child to play with the dog only when you’re around. Make sure your children are taught not to harm the dog, and not to tug on his tail or squeeze the dog.

Energy Level

American Pitbull Terrier is perfectly at home in a normal urban apartment, however they require regular walks, and socialising with their friends. Any type of exercise is suitable for the dog. He enjoys jumping, running at a rope, hanging from it or a pool, and tug-of-war games.

Sports

Pit Bulls surprise many dog lovers with their versatility: The sporty and persistent dogs are often used in their home country as rescue or search dogs. A Pit Bull needs a lot of exercise and is always available for a common adventure with its caregivers. Dog sports such as agility can also give the American Pit Bull Terrier great pleasure, but frequent jumps should rather be avoided due to the tendency to hip dysplasia. In any case, it is important that your companion does not engage in strenuous sports or climb stairs before he is fully grown. Because of the innate acuity of the breed, protection dog sports should not be practiced with a Pit Bull, as this would tend to increase the undesirable facilities.

Health

American Pit Bull Terriers can have a tendency to hip dysplasia. This risk can be minimized by appropriate breeding examinations and the risk of hip arthrosis can be reduced by maintaining normal weight. The breed also has a disposition for canine demodicosis, a skin disease caused by excessive infestation with the hair follicle mite. Also as skin irritations can show up various allergies, from which the Pit Bull can be affected. All in all, however, it is a robust four-legged friend that can live to be about 12 years old with good care.

Grooming and Care

Main in Short:

  • The dog is comfortable in a city home and in a country home however, not on chains. This breed was not designed for this.
  • They love to walk or play outdoors for long periods of time and require daily physical exercise the dog’s body needs to remain in top shape.
  • The breed is very easy to maintain. All you have to do is brush your ears at least once a week, brush its hair using a specific massage brush and cut its nails. The pit bulls are bathed whenever they need to.
  • Pit Bulls are sensitive to drafts and they are also susceptible to allergies.
  • If they are not exercising enough or a diet that is too high, they are at risk of becoming overweight.

More in Detail:

The coat of the breed is short and accordingly easy to groom: Brush the coat once a week. Get your puppy used to this ritual – most dogs enjoy the caring strokes. You should only bathe your companion in an absolute emergency and with a mild dog shampoo, because the skin flora of short-haired breeds regenerates only slowly. Check the length of the claws regularly and shorten them with claw scissors if necessary. Often this is only necessary in old age, if at all. Some dog owners brush their four-legged friends’ teeth daily – and for the purpose of getting used to them from puppy age on – with dog toothpaste and a special dog toothbrush to prevent tartar. Alternatively, dental care snacks or dry chewing items such as dried cattle ears can be provided.

Pit Bull Nutrition

The health of a dog determines to a large extent also the daily bowl content. Therefore, you should choose a food that is appropriate to the species and contains a high percentage of meat: meat should be at the top of the list of ingredients. If you want to switch from the previous food to another food, never proceed abruptly, but mix a little more of the new food into the already known food every day. This prevents hypersensitivity reactions, especially if the food has different qualities. While a puppy should receive four smaller meals a day, two portions are sufficient for an adult quadruped. Make sure that your pit bull then has a rest period, for example for a digestive nap. It is therefore best to always feed your puppy after a long walk. With regard to the daily amount of food, the manufacturer’s instructions can only provide a rough guide, as the actual energy requirement depends on the constitution and activity of your companion.

The 2 Most Important Principles are:

  • It is essential to have water readily accessible
  • Don’t give any food from the table

Considerations before Buing a Pitbull and Final Words

Pit Bulls are widespread all across the globe. They are sturdy, fun dogs that can bring a wealth of happiness into the family home. They are great babysitters and are loyal companions and brave guardians to their owners when properly taken care of and training.

Sadly, apart from the critical public perception the keeping of Pit Bulls or Am Staffs is made more difficult in numerous countries and regions: In many federal states of Germany as well as Austria the keeping is connected with strict conditions – from the dog driver’s license to the agreement of the responsible mayor – and partly higher dog taxes. In Switzerland, keeping dogs is completely forbidden in some cantons. A complete entry ban for Pit Bulls and quadrupeds with similar appearance exists in France, Denmark and Great Britain.

Before moving in, ask about any existing regulations and higher dog taxes and take this opportunity to calculate the average costs that regularly arise for dog food, veterinarian and insurance. As a dog-experienced animal lover, you already know the cost-intensive basic equipment for four-legged friends (leash, harness, collar, beds and blankets, transport security for the car, care utensils, toys).

PET BULL PALOOZA COMING TO NEW YORK

Animal welfare organizations collaborate to provide services and celebrate pit bull terriers in the Bronx Saturday, Oct. 23.

Nothing is more petable, hugable and loveable than a pit bull terrier!

And to help publicize this fact, Best Friends, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and the ASPCA are teaming up to present Pet Bull Palooza, a celebration of pit bull terriers and other short-haired muscular mutts and their families at Crotona Park in the Bronx on October 23.

Come support responsible dog guardianship while taking part in the festivities as well as special offers:

  • Free spay/neuter
  • Free vaccinations and microchip
  • Free ear cleaning and nail trimming
  • Free leashes and collars for first 300 dogs
  • Free toys and treats for first 300 dogs
  • Free dog food

“When free and low-cost services, such as spay/neuter and vaccinations, are provided to communities that often lack those resources, we generally receive a lot of gratitude,” says Ed Fritz, Pit Bulls: Saving America’s Dog campaign specialist. “And it is through collaborative efforts, like Pet Bull Palooza, that we will achieve No More Homeless Pets.”

Not only will there be five ASPCA mobile vehicles on hand to spay and neuter day of, but appointments will be made for additional spay and neuter surgeries at a follow up date.

And that’s a great thing for the many families in the area who love their pit bull terriers.

“The South Bronx area has a large concentration of bull terrier breeds, and while our main goal is to bring resources to help people become better educated about their dogs, it’s also about having a good time, and celebrating all the reasons we love ‘pet bulls,’” says M DeMarco, Best Friends’ New York campaign coordinator.
